On 12 July 2026, the Rotary Club of Peninsula Sunrise, together with presidents and members from eight fellow rotary\u2019s clubs, organized a special visitation service to the Shek Kwu Chau Rehabilitation Centre operated by The Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (SARDA). Located on a restricted island that has been off-limits without permission since 1963, this service marked a significant effort to extend Rotary\u2019s hand of care to a community often out of public sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 13 participants and the collective support of eight club presidents, our team set out with a clear vision: to connect hand\u2011in\u2011hand with the beneficiaries, focusing on health awareness, anti\u2011drug advocacy, peacebuilding, and economic empowerment. Around 50 residents actively engaged with us throughout the day, and the meaningful exchanges that took place truly reflected the spirit of fellowship and mutual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights of the Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The programme began with an exciting screening of the World Cup football match between Argentina and Switzerland, which brought everyone together in a lively, cheering atmosphere. Snacks and laughter filled the room, and the shared highs and lows of the game created an instant bond. Following the match, a Hong Kong professional football player shared his personal story of setbacks and breakthrough moments in his career, offering inspiring insights on resilience and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a token of appreciation, we presented the residents with custom\u2011printed T\u2011shirts bearing the words “Above Self” \u2014 a fitting reminder of Rotary\u2019s core value. In return, the centre\u2019s carpentry workshop gifted us beautifully handcrafted wooden stands, a touching gesture of goodwill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstration of Sustainable Practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The residents also gave us a guided tour of their aquaponics system \u2014 a self\u2011sustaining ecosystem meticulously maintained by the centre\u2019s team. Their produce, sold to local hotels under strict quality standards, showcases not only rehabilitation but also viable vocational skills that contribute to economic reintegration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact and Broader Significance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This visitation served as a powerful kick\u2011off for our ongoing anti\u2011drug addiction advocacy. While the government continues its public broadcasting efforts, we see our role as a second booster \u2014 raising community interest and generating wider social attention through precise, compassionate engagement. We firmly believe that regular visits from caring groups like ours can ease the residents\u2019 path back into society, because action speaks louder than words, and we are people of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friendly Match and Fellowship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The day culminated in a friendly football match with Center individuals, after the match where each club president presented trophies to the players, celebrating their effort and sportsmanship. The joy and pride were palpable on both sides. Good to see we all under good physical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To round off the experience, eight presidents indulged in a food tour of Cheung Chau, savouring the famous giant fish balls and mango desserts \u2014 a delightful ending to a day filled with purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
