Love Delivery – Rotary in Tung Chung” (扶輪東涌蜜蜜送)

By President Douglas Lam – Rotary Club of Lan Kwai Fong

On 6 September 2026, the Rotary Club of Lan Kwai Fong and the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (NAAC) marked the fifth consecutive year of “Love Delivery – Rotary in Tung Chung”. Nearly 80 Rotarians, youth members, and volunteers visited 100 low-income households in Mun Tung Estate, Yat Tung Estate, and nearby village houses, bringing daily necessities and a structured check on caregivers’ emotional health.

The visit was co-hosted with the Rotary Clubs of Hong Kong Financial Centre, Hong Kong Sunrise, and Peninsula Sunrise; sponsored by the Rotary Club of Green Hong Kong; and supported by the PwC Foundation, St John’s Cathedral Life Enrichment Centre, and the Rotary Club of Taipei Toa Tiu Tian. White rice donated by a well-known Hong Kong rice company was included in the household packs.

Tung Chung is home to many grassroots families carrying more than the ordinary weight of livelihood. Mun Tung Estate and Yat Tung Estate together comprise 29 blocks; Yat Tung Estate is the largest public housing estate in Hong Kong. Within Mun Tung Estate are special childcare centres, an early education and training centre, an integrated vocational rehabilitation service centre, and Hong Kong’s first school admitting children with mild to severe intellectual disabilities. For the caregivers in these households — often parents looking after children with special educational needs — the pressure is daily and largely unseen.

Volunteers therefore did more than deliver supplies. They sat with families, listened, and assisted caregivers in completing emotional-health questionnaires. The results were passed to NAAC social workers for professional follow-up, so that material help and counselling support travel together. The project answers District 3450’s emphasis this year on the mental health of parents and individuals, and sits within Rotary’s areas of focus on disease prevention and treatment and on maternal and child health.

District Governor Jimmy Lau joined the service and reminded us that every drop of water can gather into a sea. Upholding “Service Above Self”, he encouraged Rotarians to pool their own resources, along with those of their friends, to work as one, and to treat this visit as a starting point for further projects in Tung Chung. Assistant Governor Dominic Wai was also present.

Ms Connie Wong, Senior Executive Officer and Regional Director (Islands) of the NAAC, thanked the volunteers. She observed that the value of the visit lies less in the bags we carry than in the careful conversation at the door: residents feel warmth, and sincere companionship often reaches further than goods alone.

The fifth year is itself the point. Tung Chung families do not need a one-off gesture. Many parents bear both the cost of living and the care of a child with special learning needs. “Love Delivery” is our club’s long-term commitment to stay with them — on mental health as much as on daily needs — and to widen that care in the years ahead.

In the spirit of RI President Olayinka Hakeem Babalola’s theme, Unite to Inspire, the Rotary Club of Lan Kwai Fong and our partners will continue this collaboration with the NAAC, keep mental health at the centre of the project, and extend the service so that more households are met, heard, and supported.
