World Polio Day highlights the global efforts to achieve a world free of polio (poliomyelitis). As a life-threatening infectious disease caused by the poliovirus, the WHO has been committed to the eradication of polio since 1988. In August 2026, the WHO confirmed the success of five African countries in stopping the spread of poliovirus type 2 outbreaks, including Burundi, Ghana and Uganda.

While our district has been officially polio-free since 2000, we observe World Polio Day in October each year to raise awareness of the vital impact the polio vaccination brings to protecting every child from this devastating disease on their nervous system. We also celebrate the continued contributions of the countless parents, professionals and volunteers on the path towards polio eradication.

Rotarians may contribute to eradicate polio by organizing fundraising activities or to donate to the Rotary PolioPlus Fund directly. As in the previous year, there will be three tiers of End Polio donation in our district. These are tier one US$2,000; tier two US$1,500 and tier three US$1,000, respectively. For details, please contact the End Polio Sub-Committee Chair under [PP Anita Tang] in Hong Kong or Fund-Raising Team Deputy Chair [PP Elizabete Fong] in Macau. A series of End Polio events is forthcoming.

Currently, polio remains endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, with outbreaks found in 22 more countries. Let’s join together to eradicate polio worldwide.

In this Rotary Year, District Governor Jimmy Lau’s goal is to raise a total of US$1,000,000 for Annual Fund, Polio Plus Fund and Endowment Fund.  Rotarians are invited to support this initiative for a good cause to change lives both close to home and around the world. Your donation is important to our district. Of the amount donated to the Annual Fund, around half will return to our district three years later to support our future grant projects. If you have any queries, please feel free to contact us. As of August 24, 2026, the top giving clubs are listed below.
